EnergyRoute Japan (ERJ) is growing its Trading team and is seeking an Energy Trader to join our Trading desk. Reporting to the Trading Manager, you will take an active role in trading and optimising ERJ's portfolio across the JEPX Day-Ahead, Intraday, and Balancing Markets.
You will develop expertise across ERJ's full range of trading activities — spot trading, renewable balancing services, and flexibility services — and over time become a key decision-maker in how ERJ manages its position in the market.
Beyond execution, you will build a deep understanding of the factors that drive energy prices and market dynamics in Japan, including weather and generation forecasting, renewable asset behaviour, regulatory developments, and broader global energy supply and demand trends.
This role operates on a shift rota that includes weekend trading coverage. To account for this, weekday rest days are built into the schedule, and the rota offers flexibility where possible.
- Trading day: 8:30-18:30 （1h break）
- Non-trading day: 9:30-17:30 (1h break)

All training will be provided and no prior experience of working in energy markets is required.

Power Trading
• Develop and execute trading strategies across the JEPX Day-Ahead, Intraday, and Balancing Markets
• Optimise ERJ's portfolio position across bilateral contracts, generation assets, and customers
• Work closely with the Trading Manager to manage and optimise a diverse portfolio of renewable generation assets
• Monitor real-time P&L throughout the trading day, making informed decisions to manage ERJ's position effectively

• Develop and refine bidding price strategies for ERJ's assets across JEPX and the Balancing Market
• Dedicate structured time on non-trading days to market analysis, strategy development, and back-testing
• Build and maintain tools that support trade execution and sharpen decision-making
• Develop expertise in optimising a wide range of generation technologies including Solar PV, Hydro, Onshore Wind, and Offshore Wind

• Monitor METI regulatory developments and market news, assessing their impact on ERJ and its clients
• Share market insights and regulatory updates with the wider team
• Build a comprehensive understanding of the revenue streams available to energy market participants in Japan
• Contribute to ERJ's commercial thinking as your market knowledge develops

• Bachelor's or Master's degree.
• 1 – 3 years' work experience.
• Business-level English. Japanese language skills are a plus but not required.
• Curiosity and a willingness to learn.
• Works well under pressure
• Effective communication skills.
• Strong analytical skills. Preferably, proficiency in analysis tools/software (e.g. SQL, Pyton)
• Basic skill of Microsoft Office Excel.
